Donald Trump’s political strength is continuing to weaken. Beneath the bluster and authoritarian belligerence, we’re seeing mounting evidence that his grip is loosening, from public opinion to pushback from GOP states to court losses.

New YouGov polling puts Trump’s approval at 39%, with Democrats leading the latest Quinnipiac generic ballot ahead of the midterms by 9 points. He’s underwater on every major issue — the economy, immigration, inflation — and losing ground among key demographics that helped him win in 2024. The fear of losing control in 2026 is driving his increasingly authoritarian behavior.

Meanwhile, his plan to reshape the 2026 midterm landscape is running into resistance from his own party. Republican lawmakers in Kansas, Nebraska, New Hampshire, and Indiana are pushing back against his corrupt mid-decade redistricting campaign, a scheme meant to dilute Black and Latino voting power and guarantee the GOP more seats. Even JD Vance’s pressure trips aren’t working. That’s a major crack in Trump’s pre-midterm strategy.

On top of that, federal courts are slamming the brakes on Trump’s most extreme actions. Judges have restricted ICE’s violent tactics against civilians and indefinitely blocked the administration’s Project 2025 layoffs during the shutdown, ruling that the plan to turn furloughs into permanent firings was likely unlawful. The judiciary is reminding Trump’s team that they still have to answer to the rule of law.

All of this adds up to a simple truth: Trump is not untouchable. His approval is sinking, his legal losses are piling up, and his attempts to strong-arm states and agencies are backfiring. His movement is fueled by fear, not strength. And the more the system and the people push back, the more desperate he becomes.

Trump may act like a king, but reality keeps proving otherwise.
