Trump Is A Lot Weaker Than He Appears (Update): The MAGA Coalition Is Fracturing

Trump's grip on his coalition is weakening. The Epstein vote defections, the H-1B visa fight, the MAGA civil war over Nick Fuentes, and Trump's cratering approval numbers depict a GOP in disarray.

The myth of Trump as an untouchable political force is collapsing in real time. As I’ve been arguing for months, Trump is far weaker than he appears, and the results of the 2025 elections only confirmed it. Republicans suffered sweeping losses nationwide, weighed down by Trump’s toxicity, unpopularity, and inability to appeal beyond the MAGA base. Now, in the aftermath of those losses, the fractures inside Trump’s coalition are widening into clear, unmistakable breaks.

The most dramatic rupture is unfolding around the fight to release the Epstein files. Despite Trump’s efforts to stop a discharge petition, including a Situation Room meeting and frantic lobbying, Reps. Boebert, Greene, Massie, and Mace defied him. The petition hit 218 signatures, forcing a House vote that could see dozens of Republicans break with Trump and demand transparency he desperately wants to block. This alone exposes a massive crack in the movement. For years, MAGA used Epstein conspiracies to attack Democrats, but now Trump is the one fighting to conceal the files, and his base is noticing.

At the same time, the coalition is splintering over the Nick Fuentes controversy and the broader debate about how much extremism the GOP is willing to publicly embrace. Fuentes’ white supremacist rhetoric, amplified on Tucker Carlson’s platform and defended by Project 2025 architect Kevin Roberts, triggered a backlash from figures like Ben Shapiro and exposed a deep divide inside the modern right. Layer on the fight over H-1B visas, where Trump’s defense of foreign workers triggered the “America First” crowd, and you see a coalition arguing with itself on fundamental ideological questions.

All of this is happening while Trump sits below 40% approval in multiple polls, underwater on the economy and immigration, and unable to command the party like he once did. He can project false strength, but he can’t authentically uphold it. He is a lame-duck president whose agenda is faltering, whose gerrymandering push is stalling, and whose political weight is dragging his party down. These fractures won’t heal as 2026 approaches. They will deepen. And Republicans know it.

The cracks in the MAGA coalition aren’t going away. They’re accelerating.
