The 2025 elections were a massive win for Democrats and American democracy, while dealing a significant blow and a warning to Trump’s GOP.
Voters across the country sent a clear message: they’ve had enough of Donald Trump’s authoritarianism and the GOP’s failure to address the affordability crisis. Democrats notched decisive wins in Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Maine, Georgia, and California, to name a few. In nearly every locality, the political tide shifted left, defying Trump’s agenda and reinforcing the fundamental truth that his grip on the electorate is slipping fast.
Virginia once again proved to be the nation’s key political bellwether. Rep. Abigail Spanberger’s near–15-point victory offered a powerful rebuke of Trumpism in a state hit hard by Project 2025’s federal worker purges. Spanberger won 64% of Loudoun County, roughly 8 points higher than Kamala Harris’ 2024 margin. CNN exit polling showed that 61% of voters with a federal worker or contractor in their household backed her. Virginians directly punished Trump for his vindictive governance, proving that authoritarian overreach carries a cost at the ballot box.
New Jersey and New York told the same story. In New Jersey, Mikie Sherrill won by 13 points after running on affordability and highlighting Trump’s assault on infrastructure projects like the Gateway Tunnel project. In New York, Zohran Mamdani made history as the city’s first Muslim mayor in the post-9/11 era, running a disciplined grassroots campaign powered by unprecedented volunteer engagement across boroughs and centered on affordability. These races showed that Democrats are winning when they focus on local needs and lowering costs.
The pattern held nationwide. California voters passed Proposition 50, backing Governor Newsom’s redistricting measure to counter Trump’s national gerrymandering effort with over 60% support. Georgia Democrats flipped statewide utility-regulation offices in deep-red territory, while Maine voters rejected a restrictive voter-ID measure. Even Pennsylvania reaffirmed its progressive tilt, keeping a 5-2 Democratic majority on its Supreme Court. Together, these results form a resounding rejection of Trumpism.
Americans are still defying authoritarianism with their votes. Democrats are building a broad coalition — moderate, progressive, and local — united by one simple goal: making life more affordable while protecting democracy. This is a big tent party where candidate-locality-fit matters. Meanwhile, the GOP’s strategy of fear, division, and self-interest continues to backfire. If these 2025 results are any indication, 2026 could bring an even more decisive rebuke to Donald Trump than 2018.
My takeaway is clear: Trump’s authoritarian facade masks deep political fragility. For months, I’ve argued that Trump’s strength is performative — a projection meant to conceal erosion beneath the surface. The 2025 elections just proved it. Votes still matter. Elections still matter. And the American people are still capable of defying authoritarianism at the ballot box. If Democrats continue this trajectory, 2026 could bring a historic reckoning, not just for Trump, but for the movement he’s built on fear and deception.
