Trump Is The Worst Possible President For The AI Arms Race - My Latest MS NOW Appearance

On MS NOW’s Money, Power, Politics with Stephanie Ruhle, I broke down Trump’s “super intelligence” rebrand, the AI arms race with China, and why we need both regulation and enhanced liability.

On Monday morning, I joined Stephanie Ruhle on Money, Power, Politics on MS NOW for the full hour, alongside Alex Witt, Josh Tyrangiel and Shawna Thomas. We covered a lot of ground, including the midterms and the case for a big tent party. But the AI conversation is where I want to focus, because what Trump is doing on AI is dangerous.

Alex asked about the national security case for racing China on AI. Trump’s new AI czar, Jay Clayton, compared AI to the nuclear arms race. Out of the other side of his mouth, he argued against slowing the technology down. Last time I checked, endless nuclear proliferation does not end well. We shouldn’t sacrifice humanity’s well-being for the sake of a race. A president who actually cared about this issue could bring China to the table and build a global, nuclear-deal-level monitoring regime with inspectors inside these companies. Instead, Trump is the worst possible president for this moment.

Then there’s the rebrand. Trump’s effort to rename AI “Super Intelligence” is a linguistic propaganda game. Untamed superintelligence is the long-term risk everyone is warning about. By rebranding AI as the risk itself, he’s downplaying it. That isn’t functional, and it isn’t what the American people want.

Taking the risk seriously means taking rogue AI agents seriously. Senators Josh Hawley and Chris Murphy have a bipartisan bill to expand the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act so we can hold AI companies accountable when their agents go rogue. We need regulation, and we need enhanced liability. As Stephanie put it on set, that’s the whole enchilada.

I have plenty of other thoughts on AI regulation, the many risks, and how Trump’s investments in AI are tainting his approach. I couldn’t get to all that in this segment, so I will definitely share more of those thoughts later.

You can watch one of the full AI blocks on YouTube below, and also see another segment we did on the race for control of the Senate. Long story short, Republicans are on defense, and Democrats are on offense.

Thank you as always for tuning in! It means a lot.
